TWC’s mission is to build a healthy community for people and wildlife. As a registered charity, we are dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and to educating the public on wildlife-related issue. We are the only accredited and fully-equipped wildlife veterinary hospital in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and the sole rehabilitation centre to offer emergency rescue for wild animals 365 days a year. Since opening in 1993, we have admitted over 100,000 wild animals from close to 300 species.
Body-gripping traps should be banned
One morning, Lori came across a heart-wrenching sight… the right paw of a poor raccoon was caught in a cruel leg-hold trap. Despite the pain, the raccoon tried feebly to free herself. But the metal trap was attached by a cable to a tree, and the frightened animal couldn’t escape. Lori sought immediate help, not wanting the injured raccoon to suffer any longer.
Tragically, this is only one of many species of wild animals who have been brought in caught in these inhumane, unregulated traps. With injuries far too severe, the majority sadly don’t make it. But there are a lucky few whose lives can be saved - and a chance for justice to be served for those who set the traps illegally.
Though we caution this may not be appropriate for some viewers, we encourage those who can watch to learn more. Please share and spread awareness about these terrible devices.

A caring high school teacher, Jon, luckily found her and took quick action to free her and get her help. With a fractured pelvis and several damaged feathers, it would be a while before the owl could take to the night sky again. She needed a...

Andrea was walking along a Toronto street when she spotted a weak red fox on the road. She watched as he took a few steps before collapsing onto the pavement. Something was seriously wrong. At TWC, Dr. Cameron Berg suspected the lethargic fox had been hit by a car, but an ultrasound and bloodwork ruled this out. The next day revealed continuous bleeding from minor wounds - a concerning sign the...

thank you.
Thanks for sharing this procedure. I had no idea. Appreciate your work. #donor
Thank for all your incredible work! This is horrific…..it is heart wrenching that humans are so cruel and evil!
❤🐢😊
The City should Ban people who put any Traps on the Wildlife and give them a BIG Fine to these Heartless People. Thanks to Toronto Wildlife Centre for your Kindness and God Bless to All of You. 💓💘💕
There are people who will take care of such animals as long as government does not take any actions… there are many humans who are disabled and have physically challenged and also there are druggies in the society who can live in this society .. but a disabled animal can’t live and needs to be euthanized and that too that animal was disabled by a human.. what a logic and hypocrisy… I don’t understand if humans do have any sense or do they even make sense with decisions … sad to hear that healthy baby was supposed to be euthanized
Thank you for helping these little creatures.
I for one, can't watch! I know what I would see and would not be able to un see and I am aware of how horrible these traps are and that they should be illegal. It is devastating to me, a human being set this out to trap an innocent animal, knowing that animal would suffer for a very long time. Have to wonder, what kind of human is that. I am sure Lori was shocked and traumatized but so grateful she just acted and acted fast on behalf of this little racoon ❤ TWC - don't know how you do it but we are so fortunate you're there for our wildlife.
ban leg-hold traps
What a tragic story. I'm so glad charges were put against this individual, but why on earth aren't these devices banned in Canada? I can't think of any legitimate reason for them that wouldn't cause cruelty to animals, as defined by the law. It makes no sense. So sad that it was fastened to a tree outside, where the raccoon was just minding its own business doing raccoon-things like climbing trees.
Thank you for all you do. What kind of a person would do that to a poor innocent animal. So sad. 😢Thank god he was caught and charged.
I am furious that this cruelty is still showing up and that animas are being tormented and maimed. Their lives are hard enough, considering the degree of encroachment we have inflicted on their habitats.
I feel the same. We need to start petition and present our voices to the municipality bylaw makers.
So lucky to have the Toronto Wildlife Centre .
Thank you for the work you do, and yes, ban leg-hold traps. It's just barbaric, cruel, unnecessary, and vindictive.
You guys do great work helping animals in need. Just this morning I found an opossum that had been hit by a car and contacted you right away. You guys are the best!
Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much for the kind words and taking the time to help the injured opossum 💚
This is a perfect example of how indiscriminate glue traps are and why they should be banned. Thank you TWC for saving these babies.

Awesome job guys! So beautiful seeing this owl get to go back home so healthy!
WOW I never knew such a procedure was possible ! Perhpas the most interesting and facinating thing I will learn this year - thank you so much for educating us and for helping our wildlife.
This was amazing! But as I watching and read about your foundation I knew your care and guidance will result in great care for all birds and animals..
Thank you for being aware of our beautiful wildlife and thank you TWC for saving the owl.
What an amazing story. To be able to attach new feathers to the owl and then release her was wonderful. Great work.
WOW! This has to be one of the most extraordinary videos, procedures and stories you have shared to date. What an incredibly innovative and amazing procedure, requiring so many people, skills and adaptations - all to help this beautiful bird fly sooner than later. I was waiting for the release of this owl and didn't expect it so soon, but wow it's one of the most touching and incredible of stories. A new set of donor feathers!!! Thank you for all you do, TWC!
Cuteness overload for sure! So many adorable faces to fall in love with! Thank you TWC for giving all these sweet babies a second chance at life!
Such a fascinating procedure! Thank you to Jon and TWC for giving this lucky owl a second chance!
Just what did the owner expect to "get" by having glue trap in his ceiling?
Thank you to Dr Berg and the TWC team. We need to ban rodenticides!
His tail was waggling after his release. He was really happy. Pain gone and back home 👍
I can only imagine how challenging this time of year is for the entire team. What would we do without you? What would our wild neighbours do without you? Much love to you all. 💕
💖♥🤍
I beg to differ: the cuteness level of baby opossums is much higher than 25%! 100% across the board IMO.
We keep hearing we need to get the accuracy of the cuteness meter checked for this reason ... we're looking into it since, of course, we agree 😉
I feel sad so many are orphaned but am very grateful for TWC staff and volunteers making sure these little ones get the best possible start in life. Proud to be a monthly supporter and very happy to have given extra this month to help you take care of all the babies ❤
Hi @userMelC, Thank you so much for your continued support and going even further by giving an additional gift this month, wow! You're ensuring wild babies get the help they need 💚
Thank you ❤so much for all the great work you do!
Adorable babies, all of them.
Please support TWC this is such a worthy charity……. Always saving our wildlife
Thank you 💚
you people are angels, saving little lives, helping so many, thank you ❤❤
Did the swan unite with its friends and family after the wonderful care it received?
Hi @amberare6268, Once fully recovered, the swan was released where he was originally found! 💚
thanks so much. You are so amazing
How stressful 😥 😢 OMG ! Heroes TWC❤
So sad 😢what these glue traps can do 😢 Thank you 🙏 ❤
Many years ago a Toronto downtown bank called FLAP about a bird that had gotten into the building and got stuck on a glue trap intended for mice (poor mice!). The small bird was alert but pasted down on its breast with its wings spread. It had already torn feathers from struggling to escape. We also used oil to remove the bird from the trap and it subsequently went to TWC for further care and attention.
Infuriating but also heartwarming. So grateful for TWC ❤ but sad these two little babies suffered so and that they were separated from their mama. I really hope the homeowner trukt understands how horrible glue traps are for any living creature. They need to be banned!
This was so heartwarming 💕
Thanks to Jon for saving the owl and also for removing all the fishing line!
TWC are genuine wildlife heroes. Thank you so much for sharing these videos of all the hard work that goes into rescuing and caring for the babies and other wildlife in your care. ❤
I am so, so, so grateful for TWC and everyone who works there and volunteers ❤ I can't imagine how frightened these poor, innocent little babies must have been and to know we have such caring citizens and TWC is such a relief. I know it can be a lot of hours but it must be so rewarding 🥰 This is why we are monthly donors and will donate what else we can throughout the year.
Thank you so much @userMelc - we are able to help so many wild lives because of generous donors like you!
Our wild neighbours have no idea how lucky they are having the whole team looking out for them. Thank you.
